Indian Constitution
The Constitution of India was drafted by the Constituent Assembly of India and was declared as passed on 26th November, 1949. It was enacted on 26th January, 1950 and laid the foundations for establishment of the democratic republic of India. Background . The British came to India in 1600 as traders, in form of East India Company with exclusive right of trading in India. But in 1765 Company obtained the Diwani of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. . In 1858, in the wake of 'sepoy mutiny' the British Crown assumed direct responsibility for the governance in India and continued till 1947. It was in 1934 when MN Roy put forward the idea for the Constitution of a Constituent Assembly which was finally formed in 1946 and on 26th January, 1950 the Constitution came into being. Indian Independence Act, 1947 Came into force on 18th July, 1947, divided British Indian Territory into two new states: India and Pakistan, which were to be dominions under the Commonwealth of Nations until their Constitutions came into effect. •
